Cast includes Rashida Jones, Chris O’Dowd, Olivia Colman
LONDON — Nick Frost, Rashida Jones, Chris O’Dowd and Olivia Colman have all lined up to star in hot-stepping U.K. comedy ‘Cuban Fury.’
Pic, which is produced by Brit shingle Big Talk Pictures, is based on an original idea from Frost about a shabby, down-on-his-luck man (played by Frost) who reignites his long-dormant passion for salsa dancing thanks to a new-found love for his gorgeous American boss (played by Jones).
‘Cuban Fury’ marks the directorial debut for James Griffiths, whose TV credits include ‘Up All Night’ and ‘Free Agents.’
Jon Brown, TV scribe for ‘Misfits’ and ‘Fresh Meat,’ pens the script.
The romantic comedy is co-financed by Studiocanal and Film4 (Big Talk has a co-financing and co-production deal with the two outfits) and the BFI Film Fund.
Speaking to Variety, Big Talk producer Nira Park said the pic, which birthed out of an email Frost sent to her last year, has been in ‘quick development compared to other projects we’ve worked on.’
‘With ‘Cuban Fury’ there was a great one-line pitch and the idea of Nick dancing was funny,’ she said. ‘I’ve always wanted to do a dance movie and this is a great romantic comedy with massive dance sequences and a real U.K. sensibility rooted in reality.’
Frost, who told Variety he’d been training in salsa dancing for the part for the past few months, said the idea came out of his ‘weird fear of dancing.’
‘This fear spoilt my wedding,’ he quipped. ‘But this film will hopefully show that it’s not just about aesthetics and that you don’t have to look incredibly beautiful to be a good dancer.’
Frost will exec produce the project along with Big Talk’s Matthew Justice and Rachael Prior, Studiocanal’s Danny Perkins and Jenny Borgars and Film4’s Tessa Ross.
Pic begins lensing in Blighty in seven weeks.
Frost is repped by Hamilton Hodell, Safran Company and UTA, while Jones is repped by UTA and Brillstein Entertainment and Schreck Rose Dapello Adams and Hurwitz.
O’Dowd is repped by Gordon and French, UTA and 3 Arts and Coleman is repped by United Agents.
Studiocanal is handling worldwide sales rights.
