Friday Night Dinner – the award-winning comedy series – returns to Channel 4 for a third helping.

In series 3, Dad paints a picture of mum that looks like Margaret Thatcher, mum tries to practice her counselling on the boys, Adam brings a ‘female’ home for dinner, Jonny gets a revolting tattoo, Jim swallows his dog’s sleeping pills, and grandma is getting married to the horrible Mr Morris…

Wonderfully played by an ensemble cast, including Tamsin Greig (Green Wing, Black Books), Simon Bird (Inbetweeners), Paul Ritter (Pulling) and Tom Rosenthal (Plebs), plus special guest star, Mark Heap (Green Wing, Spaced), Friday Night Dinner is a truly original series about growing up but not growing away. In the best traditions of Channel Four comedy, it successfully marries the ground-breaking with the familiar and best of all, it’s really, really funny.

Friday Night Dinner is written and produced by Robert Popper, whose combined credits as a writer/producer/script editor include Look Around You, Peep Show, South Park, The Inbetweeners, Him & Her, The IT Crowd and many more iconic series of recent times. He also wrote the massive selling ‘Timewaster Letters’ books under his pseudonym, Robin Cooper.

For the Goodman family, Friday Night Dinner is just like Sunday lunch: just take two days away, change the meal to dinner, and you’ve pretty much got it. Adam (SIMON BIRD) and his brother, Jonny (TOM ROSENTHAL), view Friday night dinner as a necessary annoyance – necessary because they get fed, and annoying because, well, they have to spend the evening with mum (TAMSIN GREIG) and dad (PAUL RITTER).

In Series 2, Adam goes on a date with a girl who smells like mum, Jonny starts going out with a much older woman, mum is forced out the house by a mouse, dad starts drying fish in the downstairs cupboard, neighbour Jim makes a birthday cake for his dog, Wilson, grandma gets a new boyfriend who no one likes, and we meet dad’s mother – ‘Horrible Grandma’.

Big Talk Productions - Friday Night Dinner

“This is one dinner invitation you won’t want to miss, as the brilliantly funny sitcom, about the shenanigans at the Goodman’s weekly family get-togethers, returns”

(Total TV Guide)

“The first series of Friday Night Dinner proved an instant hit with viewers… Now the exploits of the highly amusing Goodmans are set to engross us once again”

(Sunday Express)

“Robert Popper’s comedy it some terrific comic highs on its debut last year, and it returns in even finer fettle for a second series… crackling scripts and perfect casting”

(Daily Telegraph Review)

“The first series was C4’s biggest comedy launch in the last seven years, and has since gone on to win the Best Situation Comedy Award at the Rose D’Or Festival”

FRIDAY NIGHT DINNER For the Goodman family, Friday Night Dinner is just like Sunday lunch: just take two days away, add on an extra course and you’ve pretty much got it.

This new Channel Four comedy is written and produced by Robert Popper, whose combined credits as a writer/producer/script editor include Look Around You, Peep Show, South Park, Inbetweeners, Him & Her, The IT Crowd and many more iconic series of recent times. Robert has a mum, a dad and a brother and it would be fair to say that any resemblance between them and the Goodman Family featured in the show is entirely intentional.

Adam and his brother, Jonny, view Friday night dinner as a necessary annoyance; necessary because they get fed, and annoying because, well, they have to spend the evening with Mum and Dad. It’s not that Mum and Dad aren’t wonderful. They really are. But Dad slugs ketchup straight from the bottle, Mum is obsessed with Masterchef and even Grandma likes to wear her new bikini around the house.

As for the next generation, there is much consternation that Jonny’s girlfriend, Alison, is nothing less than ‘made-up’ and not even the Internet can sort out a “female” for Adam. Maybe this is because Adam writes jingles for toilet roll adverts, and Jonny’s favourite party trick is to jump out of bin-liners onto unsuspecting victims. Of course every family has its foibles, its rituals and its eccentricities. It’s just that the Goodmans have made something of an art form of theirs ….

Wonderfully played by an ensemble cast including Tamsin Greig (Green Wing, Black Books), Simon Bird (Inbetweeners), Paul Ritter (Pulling) and comedy newcomer, Tom Rosenthal, plus special guest star, Mark Heap (Green Wing, Spaced), Friday Night Dinner is a truly original series about growing up but not growing away. In the best traditions of Channel Four comedy, it successfully marries the ground-breaking with the familiar and best of all, it’s really, really funny.

Big Talk Productions - Friday Night Dinner

“It’s almost guaranteed to be funny, but that’s not just thanks to Bird and his co-stars. The production company behind this new show has talent from Peep Show, The IT Crowd, The Royale Family, The League of Gentlemen and Shaun of The Dead working on it to make this as big as The Inbetweeners. With a team like that, they might just pull it off”

“Superb Stuff”

(The Guardian)

“While their bad habits might make you gag – squirty cream on bread and salty water, anyone? – there are proper belly laughs courtesy of mum Jackie and dad Martin. Proper belly laughs”

(The Sun)

“What a rarity: a sitcom that isn’t black-hearted, cruel, vituperative, mean-spirited or blushingly filthy. Friday Night Comedy is rather sweet, which might sound like the kiss of death for a comedy, but luckily it’s funny, too”
