Meet the Rev Adam Smallbone (Tom Hollander). He is a Church of England vicar, newly promoted from a sleepy rural parish to the inner-city world of St Saviour’s in East London. It is a world he has little experience of. And it shows.
It is an incredibly difficult job being a good, modern, city vicar. And, equally, it is a very hard job being married to one. Alex – Adam’s long-suffering wife – does her best to support him, but she’s got her own career as a solicitor to worry about. And she is no one’s idea of a conventional vicar’s wife.
Every day throws up a moral conflict. All are welcome at St Saviour’s and Adam can’t turn any of them away – even if they’re clearly lying or just very annoying.
In this first episode, Reverend Adam is feeling the pressure of trying to fill a rundown London church – that is, until his congregation quadruples overnight. But the sudden influx of worshippers isn’t down to word getting out about his wonderful sermons; there’s a rumour going round that the local church school is about to get a great Ofsted report. Faced with a bunch of hypocritical parents desperately vying for his attention in the hope he’ll recommend their child, Adam is tempted to trade a school place for the expensive restoration of a broken stained-glass window.
