Mum recommissioned for a second series

Hit BBC Two sitcom Mum to return for a second series.

BBC Two today confirmed the recommission of the critically acclaimed sitcom MUM by Stefan Golaszewski.

The comedy series produced by Big Talk will return for a further 6 x 30 series to shoot next year. The final episode of the current series aired last night on BBC Two.

Starring Olivier Award winner and BAFTA-nominated actress Lesley Manville, Mum is a family sitcom seen through the eyes of Cathy (Manville). Series 1 followed her in her life as she moves on from the death of her husband. Starting with the family gathering for the funeral in January and ending on New Year’s Eve, viewers saw Cathy and her family go through the major and minor events of the year. It’s the story of a woman finding who she is again and maybe finding love second time around.

The series, which has been described as a ‘subtle masterpiece’ by The Times, also stars Peter Mullan, Sam Swainsbury, Lisa McGrillis, Ross Boatman, Dorothy Atkinson, Marlene Sidaway and Karl Johnson.

Mum is a Big Talk Production, in association with The Money Men. The comedy reunited the creative team behind the BAFTA award-winning sitcom for BBC Three HIM AND HER including writer/executive producer, Stefan Golaszewski; director, Richard Laxton; producer, Lyndsay Robinson and executive producer, Kenton Allen.

The series has been recommissioned by Shane Allen, Controller, Comedy Commissioning and BBC Comedy commissioning editor Kate Daughton.

Shane Allen, Controller, Comedy Commissioning added, “This well-loved and warm-hearted show has been blessed with that rare alchemy of great concept, beautiful writing and terrific cast. Series 2 gives us a more positive Cathy at the core of this world as she moves forward from the lost love of series 1, all laced with deftly drawn characters and comedy sparkle.”

Kenton Allen, Chief Executive of Big Talk Productions added, “BBC Comedy’s support of Big Talk and Stefan Golaszewski has been phenomenal ever since we sent them a script called HIM AND HER in 2009. Shane Allen’s creative leadership on MUM had been impeccable from day one and a confident recommission for a second series by Shane and Charlotte Moore is another signal that they are a world class organization and one of the very best places to produce original comedy on the planet. And they told me on my birthday. Best present ever!”

Big Talk Productions is part of ITV Studios.
