A Young Doctor’s Notebook & Other Stories is a comedy drama inspired by a selection of further works by the celebrated Russian writer and playwright Mikhail Bulgakov, including the semi-autobiographical story, Morphine.
The upcoming series two returns to the small village of Muryevo in 1918 to find the Young Doctor (Daniel Radcliffe) battling against an all-consuming morphine addiction. Under the critical gaze of his “clean” older self (Jon Hamm), the Young Doctor struggles to cope with life in the hospital, the Civil War, and the arrival of Natasha, a beautiful young aristocrat.
Series two sees Jon Hamm and Daniel Radcliffe reprise their roles in the most successful series in the history of Sky Arts.
“This comedy drama has delivered record-breaking ratings for Sky Arts, hopefully as a result of its excellence as an adaptation of Mikhail Bulgakov’s short stories as well as the celebrity of Daniel Radcliffe and Jon Hamm, both also superb”
(The Guardian)
“The heightened, eventually hilarious gloom of Mikhail Bulgakov’s writing has been successfully brought to life in this series”
(Time Out)
“Radcliffe is particularly good as the novice with not much of a clue as to how to deal with the ailments set before him”
(The Independent )

Moscow, 1934. A respectable–looking doctor (JON HAMM) receives an unwelcome visit from the Soviet secret police, who suspect him of malpractice. Flicking through an old notebook, he looks back with fondness on his first post and begins to visit his memories.
Rural Russia, 1917. Straight out of medical school, the young doctor (DANIEL RADCLIFFE) is sent to a remote village in the middle of nowhere to run a small hospital. Idealistic and proud of his grades, he soon learns about the reality of treating an uneducated and suspicious peasant population.
As he learns his craft, talking – and arguing – with his older self, the young doctor dreams of escape. Escape from his remote new home, from his colleagues –overbearing senior midwife Anna (VICKI PEPPERDINE), blunt junior midwife Pelageya (ROSIE CAVALIERO) and his intrusive auxiliary, the feldsher (ADAM GODLEY) – and from the brutalising operations he has to perform.
The relationship between the young doctor and his older self becomes more intense as the young doctor comes to see that morphine offers a release – but one that comes at a price.
“Brisk and engaging, this is an unusual and thoroughly enjoyable series”
(Daily Mail – Weekend)
“This black comedy boasts two of the most famous actors in the world … as you’ve never seen them before”
(We Love TV)
“The first of a thoroughly entertaining four-part drama, made all the more appealing by a superb supporting cast of Vicki Pepperdine, Adam Godley and Rosie Cavaliero … a must-see”
(The Observer)
